Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently made news with his comments against the Threads app. In an interview with The Verge, Mosseri stated that Threads is purposefully meant to avoid news and politics.
According to Mosseri, including such information attracts undue scrutiny and hostility, and jeopardises the app’s credibility. This unexpected approach has stirred curiosity and debate among users and observers.
According to Instagram’s CEO, the Threads app would not intentionally promote or highlight politics and hard news. Mosseri stresses that Instagram already has strong communities focusing on sports, music, fashion, beauty, and entertainment, which do not need participation in political or news-related material.
Mosseri’s perspective is undoubtedly impacted by his previous work supervising Facebook’s News Feed. By keeping Threads away from politics and harsh news, Mosseri hopes to keep the app focused on other thriving hobbies and create a happy user experience.
Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, has recently taken measures to remove itself from news and politics, as well as address concerns about the propagation of problematic content. One of these efforts is to reduce the exposure of political information on Facebook, as well as to rename the Facebook Feed to omit the term “News.”
In addition, in reaction to a new Canadian rule requiring payment for local news, Meta revealed plans to remove news from both Facebook and Instagram in the nation. These moves reflect Meta’s readiness to make major modifications to conform with developing rules and user expectations, as well as its commitment to reevaluating its position in broadcasting news and political information.
Following his original remark, Adam Mosseri gave more explanation on his position on Threads. Threads, he continued, would not aggressively prohibit or minimise news and politics, but it will not emphasise or actively seek out such information, as Facebook did in the past.
Mosseri said that
Facebook made rash commitments to the sector in the early 2010s and stated a wish to avoid making the same mistakes again.
